Engineering Careers Talk
Year 10 students, including those studying on the GCSE ‘STEM Progression Pathway’, attended a careers talk focused on engineering. Delivered by Meggitt, who operate within the aerospace, defence and energy sectors, students were given an overview of the company’s history and operations, such as hearing about their sites locally, in Shepshed, as well as internationally, where they employ over 12,000 staff across 5 continents in 16 countries. Students heard from two members of staff, including a Senior Development Engineer at the company about roles in engineering, the different branches and specialisms and routes into engineering post-GCSE and A level. Students were also able to handle key aerospace components and ask questions about their design, manufacture and use, as well as to link engineering to everyday objects.
We plan to follow the talk up with further STEM-based employer visits and talks, including life sciences and medicine, to provide students who are strongly considering careers involving science, technology, engineering or maths with experiences designed to deepen their understanding of STEM subjects and their application in the workplace.
