HS2 Careers Day

Posted on: May 12th 2022College Events

Students from Year 7, 8 and 9 took part in an off-timetable HS2-themed Careers Day.  This involved staff from Learn By Design, and a current Civil Engineer from the HS2 project, running a day of engaging and interactive activities.

Activities in the morning involved a skills audit and two team challenges.  In the first challenge, students took on the roles of Civil Engineers, Environmental Advisors, Building Information Modelling (BIM) Technicians and Customer Experience (CX) Designers to design a railway station of the future – with many students choosing a sustainable, environmentally minded theme.  In the second challenge, students constructed a model tunnel which had to meet specified criteria and support a given weight.  Students found the activities to be very engaging and enjoyable.

In the afternoon, after hearing about the HS2 rail project and the future career roles that may be open to the local community, students played a board game with a HS2 rail theme.

Students were very grateful for the time the volunteers and staff spent with them.

To find out more about STEM careers and the HS2 project, students were advised to visit:
