Year 8 – STEM Curiosity Cube
Merck, a leading science and technology company, arranged for their mobile science classroom to visit De Lisle on Friday 20 September. The solar-powered classroom was created from a shipping container and has travelled throughout Europe. Local volunteers from the world of science, including researchers from University of Leicester, led workshops throughout the day for over 150 Year 8 students.
The workshops were based around the life cycle of a T shirt and the science behind sustainability. This included:
- Learning about synthetic and natural fibers, examining them through microscopes and categorizing them based on their level of sustainability.
- Designing and testing a windmill that produces enough renewable energy to power a model t-shirt factory.
- Using a threading machine to learn how old clothing can be sorted, shredded into fibers, and re-spun into thread for new garments.
We are grateful to the Merck organisation for arranging this engaging and informative day for De Lisle students, and to the volunteers who ran the workshops throughout the day.
